I found an old packet of flower seeds that I know came from
Monticello, but unfortunatly, the package label came off. I have no idea what kind of flower this is, but boy, is it striking!

197/365: There Is Only One Flying Spaghetti Monster....
And Bobby Henderson is its prophet. Or not, as we Pastafarians reject dogma. More fooling around with the Canon while I was trying to figure out what was wrong with it. Just taking pictures of random things during my lunch break, and I figured the FSM badge on the back of my car was as good a subject as any. The reflection is pretty cool.

191/365: Bleacher Creatures
I found my old Canon Powershot point and shoot digital that supposedly didn't work anymore. New batteries, and some fiddling seemed to bring it back to life, but it is still balky, sometimes, it doesn't want to focus, and sometimes it doesn't shoot at all. Was playing around with it though, as its a lot more portable than my Nikon D50.
Here's the left field "Loony Bin" bleachers at PNC.

189/365: Chicken of the Woods!
Found a three pound clump of the famed Chicken of the Woods last night. Its been called the "60 mile an hour" mushroom, because you can spot it while driving 60 on the highway. I was doing about 15mph rounding a bend when I spotted this nice fresh sample.
Laetiporus sulphureus, also known as
sulphur shelf, is one of the "foolproof four," an excellent mushroom for beginners, since it has no dangerous lookalikes. Just don't pick it if it is growing on hemlock. As with any wild food, some people can have an allergic reaction, so if you're a first timer, just take a nibble of a cooked sample.
The mushroom has the texture and
consistency of cooked chicken, and if you cook it in chicken broth, it tastes like chicken too! When I find it, its usually in enormous clumps, so I blanch it in boiling water and then freeze it for later. This sample yielded two pounds of cleaned mushroom for freezing.

179/365: Disposable
We bought a chest freezer less than two years ago. Last week, it stopped working. After frantically transferring thawing food to my parents' house, we called for the repairman. Cost to repair? More than what the unit cost. Under warrantee? Nope, warantees are just 12 months, and even if it were under warrantee, they'd just bring an entire new freezer and discard the old one. Seems a tremendous waste of resources (steel, aluminum, wiring, motors, etc.) to me.
